In 1975 Ret. Cmdr. Charles Pitts, Sr. and his son Fletcher Pitts found Liberty neglected in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Charles, and Fletcher with his brothers Mitch and Chip, restored Liberty in wood, mahogany planking monel fastened. She sailed as a family yacht on the Chesapeake Bay. In 1985 Pitts and Sons, Inc. boatyard employed the Vaitses method to lay eleven layers of fabmat under the keel and continuous fiberglass over the topside and cabin tops, mechanically fastened to the wood hull with 1 1/2" stainless steel screws every 4" to preserve Liberty.
