Liberty information

In 1975 Ret. Cmdr. Charles Pitts, Sr. and his son Fletcher Pitts found Liberty neglected in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Charles, and Fletcher with his brothers Mitch and Chip, restored Liberty in wood, mahogany planking monel fastened. She sailed as a family yacht on the Chesapeake Bay.

In 1985 Pitts and Sons, Inc. boatyard employed the Vaitses method to lay eleven layers of fabmat under the keel and continuous fiberglass over the topside and cabin tops, mechanically fastened to the wood hull with 1 1/2" stainless steel screws every 4" to preserve Liberty.

Fletcher and Robin Clair Pitts sailed aboard Liberty to the Caribbean Sea in 1987 where Liberty
participated in yacht racing 1988 through 2004. She has a distinguished trophy record, including Best Overall, Wayfarer Marine Trophy, Antigua Classics, W.I.; Line Honors, Thanksgiving Regatta, St. John, USVI; Best in Fleet, Foxy's Woodenboat, Jost Van Dyke, BVI; Overall Winner, Sweethearts Classics, Tortola, BVI.
